Useful expressions
Write these expressions down. You will need them in the exercises below.
• change management (noun) – the management or strategy of how a company or organisation implements changes to its structure, operations or other factors
• organisational change (noun) – the process of transformation that occurs in an organisation.
• layoffs (Amer.) / redundancies (Brit.) (noun) – when a company has to implement job losses.
• to cut costs (verb) / cost-cutting (noun) – to find ways to reduce spending
• to put the feelers out (verb) – to discretely find out what other people think
• to adapt (verb), adaptability (noun), adaptable (adjective) – the ability to make changes in
response to a new situation
Watch the video and after, discuss the following questions
- Do you feel different about personal change compared to changes in the workplace? If so, why is
this? - Do you agree that we are in an era of “always on transformation”? Why or why not?
- Why do employees resist change in the workplace? Have you ever resisted change or been
unhappy with a change? - Do changes in the workplace lead to conflict? Have you experienced any conflict because of
changes that were happening? - How can you motivate or inspire people to accept organisational change?
- Does your company promote a culture of continuous learning? If so, does this help with adapting
to change?
